What Is Five Spice? In the culinary arts, five spice (also known as Chinese five spice) is a blend of ground spices used in Chinese and Vietnamese cooking.
Chinese five-spice powder is a common spice blend that can be found in most supermarkets. Its five assertive components are cinnamon, cloves, fennel seed, star anise, and Szechuan peppercorns. Our post about garam masala spice substitute.

The main difference is how these two spices are made. Allspice comes from the dried berries of its tree. Whereas 5 spice has a Chinese background containing 5 different spices. Allspice is found in both whole and powder form, whereas 5 spice is made by making the powdered form of all the spices.
At first glance seven spice powder may sound like a variant on Chinese five spice powder, but they couldn't be more different. Or rather, they're exactly as different as their native cuisines. While you're unlikely to eat enough Chinese 5 Spice to derive great nutritional benefits from it, the spices included in this mix are rich in antioxidants and are also a terrific source of minerals such as copper, iron, and manganese.

Although the exact origins of five-spice powder are lost to history, there is some thought that the Chinese were attempting to produce a "wonder powder" encompassing all of the five elements—wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. What is seven spice? First, the Arabic word for spices is “baharat.” So, we often refer to the Lebanese seven spice mix simply as baharat and use the terms interchangeably. Baharat is sort of like the Indian mix garam masala.
The way to cure bitterness is by adding a little sweetness. This can be easier said than done with savory dishes as you will need to maintain a very delicate balance. You do not want to make the dish sweet, but add enough of a sweetener to neutralize bitter notes. A little too much can ruin your dish.
